Larkspur Park

The 30th South of Ireland Open Veterans Championship took place in Limerick Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday and Sunday last 26th and 27th April. Although we had no winners Paul Anglim who was a runner up in the mixed boubles with partner Marcella Kelly from Tipperary County Tennis Club. Paul teamed up with club chairman Benny Dudley in the over fort five men’s doubles while Benny and Catherine Fitzell acquitted themselves well in the men over 40’s mixed doubles. Catherine and Marcella Kelly also teamed up in the over 35 ladies doubles. John Shannon and Mary Barry played in the mixed doubles (men over 55/ladies over 50) and Larry Power in the men’s doubles over 55. A small entry meant that several events were combined but this had no impact on the high standard of tennis during the event. Congratulation to all competitors.

Hurling Camp

The annual 3-day Juvenile Easter Hurling Camp got under way at Leahy Park last Wednesday. In keeping with tradition this year’s camp was named in memory of two former club stalwarts, brothers Christy and Michael O’Neill. Christy spent almost 10 years on the juvenile committee, chaired by Br. Ryan. He was also caretaker in Cashel CBS when the school teams were challenging year in year out for cups.

Christy was always on hand to help out with all of those teams. Michael spent many years as a senior hurling selector. He later went on to become club president, an honour he richly deserved. As a minor Michael was a member of the successful Cashel minor team of the 50’s and spent many years thereafter like Christy heavily involved in all club activities. A special thanks to Kevin Hally and his team of coaches for their time.
