The North Tipperary Board of the GAA honoured Ballina last Friday night by bringing their player and club of the year awards to the Lakeside Hotel. North board chairman, Rocky Mc Grath got the proceedings going by speaking of his memories of the Ballina club over the years and complimented them for their hard work and their success.

This was followed by the presentation of team medals to all the North’s winning team captains including the Ballina intermediate and minor teams. ‘Player of the Year’ awards in both hurling and football were next on the agenda and Pat Cosgrove was the proud and most worthy winner of the Intermediate “Player of the Year” award. Daragh Egan from Kildangan and George Hannigan of Shannon Rovers won the overall players of the year in hurling and football, respectively. Three former referees were honoured for their services to the board.

Then came the highlight of the night for everyone from Ballina with the presentation of the Club of the Year trophy to the Ballina officers - Caroline McKeogh, John Gleeson and Sarah Devane. Sarah thanked the North board for bestowing this honour on Ballina and expressed appreciation of their tireless work. Sarah spoke of the pride there is in Ballina’s success this year, the satisfaction that the long-term aim of the club has been achieved - senior status. She also thanked all within the club for their hard work at juvenile, camogie and adult levels while also expressing appreciation of the wonderful support received at our matches. This was a great night for Ballina and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Ballina handball club juvenile members had a busy weekend with Primary Schools’ 40x20 County finals taking place on Saturday last and the North Tipperary 40x20A championship finals on Sunday. Ballina Primary school representatives were most successful, winning three titles - Cian Oakley and Cathal O’Donnell won the boys U11 doubles: Gráinne O’Brien and Amy McKeogh won the girls U11 doubles: Isabel Farnan and Siobhan Prentice won the girls U13 doubles. These players will now represent Tipperary primary schools in the Munster finals in Kerry next weekend.

Another day of great performances by our juveniles was enjoyed at the North Tipperary 40x20 ‘A’ championship finals on Sunday. In the U10 doubles, our boys were narrowly beaten by a strong pair from Ballinahinch, as were our boys U11 doubles. Our girls U13 singles player was beaten by a strong Nenagh player. In the boys U11 singles, Adam Fogarty had a great win over Silvermines. Adam lost the first game, but had a convincing win in the second to take the title on overall aces. In the girls U11 doubles, Gráinne O’Brien and Amy McKeogh won both their games in convincing fashion. In the girls U12 doubles, Isabel Farnan and Siobhan Prentice made a slow start, losing their first game against Lahorna 15-9, but they rallied in the second game taking it 15-2. The tiebreaker was very close but the Ballina girls dug deep and won 15-12. Well done to all to all those that represented both the school and the club!
