Utter humiliation. Not in their worst nightmares did Tipperary followers imagine a drubbing of such magnitude on hurling’s greatest stage as All-Ireland champions, Kilkenny, hurled Tipperary off the Croke Park pitch in the second half of Sunday’s All-Ireland senior hurling semi-final to record an eighteen points, double scores victory.
There was no silverware on offer on Sunday but the prize was immense in terms of prestige, with the considerable bonus of a place in the All-Ireland final against Galway in September for the winners. For a little more than forty minutes the contest was living up to pre-match expectations but two Kilkenny goals in seven minutes shot Kilkenny nine points clear, Game over. Tipperary were in disarray, with their great rivals relishing every flag subsequently raised as they outscored Tipperary by 2-10 to 0-3 in the final twenty five minutes.
