Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada to host Equality in Education Conference in Limerick
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada is to host a major conference on Education in Limerick next week. The Ireland South MEP, who sits on the EU Culture and Education Committee, will be bringing experts from across Europe to the Treaty City to speak on a broad range of topics within the education sector.
"Equality in Education is the theme of the event," she said.
"This reaches into all aspects of education. Not just equality in terms of access to education and opportunities in later life, but, for example, equality for educators, such as those more recently qualified teachers who are facing blatant pay discrimination in a move so bare faced it defies belief.
"We'll be looking at language equality, including everything from the Irish Language to Irish Sign Language as well as examining issues such as the rights of special needs students, school drop out levels and discrimination at both a grass roots and policy making level in a series of seminars.
"We have expert speakers on the matter, not just from Ireland but coming from right across Europe from various trade unions, schools, advocacy groups and political backgrounds and I'm particularly looking forward to the keynote address from Dr. Susan Weir of the Education Research Centre.
"This is an open event, whether you are an educator, parent, student or journalist, all are welcome but as demand is expected to be quite high we would ask that people Register, for free, on our Eventbrite page by searching Liadh Ní Riada or Equality in Education."
The event takes place in the Limerick Institute of Technology, Main Building, from 10am on Saturday June 9th.
