The start of the Charleville Half Marathon 2017

Next weekend Sunday 23rd of September the Charleville Half Marathon will take place in Charleville with record numbers, the race sold out last week and has 1,600 runners in the event this weekend. If you were lucky enough to get an entry you will find that the line-up of elites in this race is always stunning and some of the names to have run the race like Sonia O Sullivan,Maria MC Cambridge, Lizzie Lee and John Travis, Ismial Ssenyange, Martin Fagen. In the last few years the numbers have been growing steadily but when the idea of running a half marathon on this now iconic route between Charleville and kilmallock it was seen as an epic task. Michael Herlihy who conceived the idea and then brought it to life had a tough time convincing his own club, (North Cork AC) let alone anyone else to run it. The idea was simple like the best of ideas, this very flat section of road between the two towns would provide the flat smooth running surface for the flattest fastest half marathon in the country. Everyone wants to run their fastest time and it only makes sense that if it is a flat surface then you will be able to run faster, numbers grew slowly at the start but now everyone wants to give it a try and the club have managed to grow with the event as the years pass by. The race is very professionally run, and was always chip timed everyone gets a T-shirt and tea and sandwiches after the race there are water stations, catering personnel, stewards on route and for parking, road closures, everything you would associate with a huge event like this. If you were lucky enough to get an entry enjoy the race and if you weren’t get in their early next year for the flattest fastest marathon in Ireland.
