The Munster Senior Cross Country Championships were hosted by Mooreabbey Milers in Galbally last Sunday and they are to be complimented on promoting a great event. In the Senior Men’s 10k race the County was relatively well represented while in the Senior Women’s race we had no representation, which was a pity.

In the Senior Men’s race Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell was on a mission. In last year’s race he was 7th and he was determined to improve on that in this year’s event. So right from the start he threw down the gauntlet by setting the early pace that soon saw himself and Tim O'Donoghue of East Cork draw clear of the rest of the field with the chasing pack including Kevin Moore of Dundrum in 4th place.

The conditions were demanding after a long programme of races but the pace was still at a very good tempo.

Then on the 2nd lap Kevin Maunsell put in another fast surge that saw him draw clear of Tim and Kevin kept that pace going all the way to the line to come home a very worthy and convincing winner.

This was a brilliant piece of front running by Kevin and it is great to see him running so well at present. Kevin Moore also ran very well, having flown in from England for this event.

Kevin went with the early and midway through the race was in a ding done battle for a top ten position. He responded very well and put in a great effort over the closing stages to finish 7th.

Then we had William Stephens of Coolquill competing at this level for the very first time and he put in a brilliant effort when finishing 12th.

Then we had the Dundrum duo of Gareth McGlinchey and Dermot Hayes also running very well when finishing 24th and 25th respectively.

Paddy Cummins of Moycarkey Coolcroo also ran very well when finishing 28th and these six athletes combined very well to win the Inter County Bronze medals and congrats to William, Gareth and Dermot for being on a County Senior team to win medals at this level for the first time, great to see such talent coming through.

Munster Masters Cross Country Championships

These Championships takes place this Sunday in Riverstick, Cork and currently we have a wealth of talent at this level in the County, so hopes are high of some very good performances on Sunday next.
