Last Thursday night the Fethard 4 Mile Road Race attracted 80 athletes on what was a cool and blustery night for racing. Despite the demanding conditions we saw some great performances. None more so than that by the winner Pat Byrne of Tinryland who came home very worthy and convincing winner in 20 mins 53 secs. He took control on the first lap and made every yard a winning one. The tussle for 2nd place went down to the wire. We had three athletes contesting with recent Poulmucka winner Declan Doherty of Thurles Crokes who is running very well at present battling it out with Ross Alexander of Coolquill as well Mike Cunningham of Bilboa over the four laps. Then on the final uphill finish Declan held off the very determined effort by Ross to finish 2nd in 21 mins 23 secs with Ross 2 seconds adrift and Mike finishing 4th in 21 mins 30 secs to win the 0/45 award. Sean Caulfield of St Senan’s won the 0/40 award when 5th in 21 mins 35 secs. Conor Fleming (Clonmel) and Niall O Ceallaigh (Clonmel) were 2nd and 3rd 0/40 in 23 mins 46 secs and 24 mins 34 secs respectively. Michael Moore (Dundrum) was 2nd 0/45 when 11th (23 mins 51 secs). Brendan Ahearne (Kilsheelan) and Brendan Cronin (Carrick on Suir) were 2nd (24 mins 5 secs) and 3rd (24 mins 27 secs) respectively. Matt Alexander (Coolquill) and Tommy Cahill (Clonmel) were 2nd (25 mins 3 secs) and 3rd (25 mins 21 secs) 0/55. Joe Grinsell (Clonmel) won the 0/60 award in 30 mins 19 secs. The Junior Men’s award was won by Irish International walker Evan Lynch of Clonmel who covered the distance in 33 mins 59 secs, great performance.
The Ladies race was also very competitive with Irish international athlete Siobhain O Doherty (Borrisokane) running very well when winning in 23 mins 2 secs when 6th overall. Margaret Danagher (Templemore) also ran very well when finishing 2nd in 24 mins 30 secs. The tussle for 3rd place went down to the wire with Clare Annan of Carrick on Suir edging out Aine Roche (Clonmel) close to the line. Clare’s time was 25 mins 10 secs with Aine 3 seconds adrift. The Ladies 0/35 prizes winners were 1st Catriona Gough Waterford 27 mins 2 secs, 2nd Jacinta Power Waterford 27 min 34 secs, 3rd Nicola Maunsell Clonmel 28 mins 32 secs. Elaine Barry Waterford won the 0/40 award in 27 min 28 secs with Teresa Cunningham Carrick on Suir 2nd in 28 mins 12 secs and Aine Hennessy Templemore 3rd in 30 mins 54 secs. Anne Cronin Carrick on Suir won the 0/45 award in 30 mins 58 secs. Bernie Prendergast West Waterford won the 0/50 award in mins secs.
The Ladies committee were complimented for the after race refreshments and race organiser, Miceal McCormack thanked all the stewards and everyone who helped to make the race such a success.
The Moyne Athletic Club Ladies Mini Marathon takes place in Moyne, Thurles on Monday June 6th at 3 pm. This race was a great success last year and all participants can be guaranteed a good level course, an ideal opportunity to achieve a Personal Best over this Class distance. The entry fee is €12 and all participants will receive a Specially designed medallion. Deadman’s 5 Mile Road Race in Carrick on Suir on Friday 6th June at 7.30pm. This is a very popular race and well worth supporting. The entry fee is €10 and for further enquiries please contact 086 1608165 or 051 641826. Last year’s winner was Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford in 25 mins 51 secs with Martina O Dwyer of the host Club winning the Ladies race in 29 mins 52 secs. Last year’s race attracted a very good entry of 191 athletes. This is an event that caters for all levels of fitness.
The Dave Fogarty 4 Mile Road Race takes place in Thurles on Friday 24th June at 7.30pm. The entry fee is €10. More details next week.
County Senior and Masters Track and Field Championships takes place in Templemore on Tuesday 28th June at 6.30pm.
