The death took place on April 11th, after a short illness of Rodger (Rody) Phelan, Glen Carraig, Two Mile Borris, (formerly of St. Bridgets Square, Portarlington and Clonterry, Mountmellick, Co Laois), in his eighty first year. Rody a very quiet gentleman was well known in the Thurles area. In his twenty five years living with his daughter Angela and her husband John Tully he was very popular while the Tully family carried out business in the Vivo Foodstore, in Loughtagalla, Thurles and from there to Gala Shop in Two Mile Borris. His death took place at his daughter's residence, Angela Tully, Glen Carraig, surrounded by his family. His remains were reposed at the residence on Thursday 12th April, where many came near and far to pay their final respects, which showed the popularity of the Tully and the Phelan family that are held in the Two Mile Borris area and further afield.
His remains were removed on Friday morning to St. James Church with a Garda Escort, while family, neighbours and friends formed guards of honour, to the man that they loved. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr. Tom Fogarty P.P assisted by Fr. George Bourke A.P and Fr. Martin Murphy P.P. Drom. Burial took place in St. Josephs Cemetery, Mountmellick, Co. Laois.
The attendance at the burial, again large numbers of people gathered to pay their final respects from the Co. Laois area. Prayers at the grave side were by Fr. Tom Fogarty, with local clergy in attendance.
Deeply mourned by his family Rodger, Goretti, Caroline, Angela, Michael, Adrian and Orla, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother Jim, sisters Louise and Angela, sons in law, daughters in law, neighbours and many friends.
