Tipperary people are being urged to take up Nenagh Lions Club's challenge to have a fun sports day and raise funds for its work.

With the long evenings and the weather getting warmer, entries are building fast for Nenagh’s hottest summer event, the Lions Club's Try a Tri and Sprint Tri.

This year’s Try a Tri will take place on Saturday, June 9. The Try a Tri’, in association with Nenagh Triathlon Club, is geared especially towards those who are completely new to triathlons, those with just a basic level of fitness, who simply enjoy a challenge and a bit of fun.

The event consists of a short swim (10 lengths/250m) of Nenagh Swimming Pool (at your own pace), followed by a 10km cycle and a 3km run or walk.

Just to spice things up for those who would like a stronger challenge, there is the option of a Sprint Tri, consisting of a 30 length/750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run; over 16s only.

Both events are offered in a range of different formats: individual adult, U18, family of four, team and relay, so there is something for everyone.

If you cannot swim, a swimmer will be  organised to take your place.

To help you prepare for the Try a Tri, Nenagh Triathlon Club isorganising a three-week Couch to Try a Tri programme, which continues next Monday, May 21, at CBS track (run 3k, free, 6pm), continues on Tuesdays at Nenagh Leisure Centre (cycle, free, 6pm, helmet required) and Wednesdays at Nenagh Leisure Centre (swim, €5, min swim ability one length). Contact Paul, 086-1950330, or email nenaghtriathlonclub@gmail.com

This year, the Lions Club is encouraging local clubs and businesses to participate and compete in teams of three. The Try a Tri’ will be followed by a BBQ, music and entertainment long into the summer evening at Una Powell’s Summerhill.

The event is supported by Tipperary Sports Partnership’s National Bike Week.

The 2018 Try a Tri is being run in support of Nenagh Olympic A.C, with sponsors A Sportsman’s Dream, Nenagh Credit Union, Una Powell’s, Pat Griffin Accounts and Carey Glass Nenagh.
