The 2016 South Tipperary Carer of the Year has been awarded to Maggie Butler from Killenaule.
Mayor Cllr Andy Moloney, presented Maggie with her very deserving certificate at a special ceremony held in her honour at Clonmel Town Hall.
Maggie was nominated by her sister, for the love and care she provides to her five children, but in particular to her son Alex (5). Maggie gave birth to twin boys (Alex and Adam) five years ago.
Tthey were born prematurely at 26 weeks and as a result Alex has a range of health issues, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy and sleep apnoea. Maggie is a full time carer to Alex, and devotes all her time to ensuring he has the best possible care at all times. At the same time Maggie also juggles the needs of her other four children.
Last Christmas was a particularly tough time for Maggie and her partner, as Alex became very ill and ended up being put on a ventilator in Temple Street, where he remained for 3 weeks.
Despite her huge worry and stress about Alex, she made sure the other kids still had their Christmas Day. Since Christmas, she and her partner spend alternating nights at Alex's bedside, watching, in case he has a seizure in his sleep.
Commenting, Richie Molloy, Family Carers Ireland Area Manager said, “We are absolutely delighted that Maggie Butler has been awarded South Tipperary Carer of the Year 2016. Maggie is a truly remarkable person, who provides much love and care to her son Alex, as well as to her other four children.”
Richie concluded, “Carers play an absolutely vital role in society, and they are at times the forgotten workforce. The Carers of the Year Awards, present an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and support carers provide to their loved ones every day throughout the year.”
All entries into the Carers of the Year Awards receive a commemorative certificate and the Tipperary Carer of the Year 2016, Maggie Butler, will now attend a special ceremony which will be held in Dublin on November 16th honouring award recipients from across the country.
One family carer will be chosen as Ireland’s Carer of the Year 2016. This is the tenth year of the awards ceremony, and for the first time, there will be four regional Young Carers of the Year Awards. 2015 saw a 400% increase in nominations for Young Carer of the Year.
