Council tenants who damage their house are “rewarded” by being transferred to another, Cllr John Carroll told North Tipperary County Council’s budget meeeting.
He said there was a minority of people who in a short time wrecked every house they were given.
“There should be some sort of penalty,” he said.
Cllr Carroll also stated that there seemed to be a reluctance by the council to act against anti-social behaviour and remove people from houses. He said other tenants were having to move because of this behaviour.
Housing officer Donal Purcell said sometimes tenants left without the council’s knowledge and houses were damaged. “We don’t tolerate it and we take cases to court,” he said.
