Foroige’s Action Packed Summer Is Full Of Challenges

This summer has been a very busy one for Foróige Nenagh Youth Development Project.

This summer has been a very busy one for Foróige Nenagh Youth Development Project.

Firstly, we would like to congratulate The Tyone Crew who participated along with 21 other groups, in the Foróige Citizenship Awards in Cork. They received a Certificate of Achievement and a special Merit Award, only four of which were awarded for their Citizenship Project.

The Tyone Crew is a group of young people aged between 10 and 16 years from the Tyone Area. They meet once a week and are supported by Foróige youth workers, Bríd Bradshaw and Olivia O’Sullivan, Nenagh Youth Development Project; Tracey Thompson, tenant liaison officer, Nenagh Town Council, and Regine Stewart, community development officer, North Tipperary Community Services

The young people decided last February that they would like to make some improvements to their locality.

They started by holding an information evening for their parents and local residents.

They proceeded by doing a big clean up in Ard Cruidín estate and bringing some other issues to the attention of Nenagh Town Council.

They organised a jumble sale in June in their local community centre as a fundraiser to assist with their group activities.

This was a very enjoyable family fun day (despite the weather!). We would like to thank the volunteers and supporters who were present on the day.

On behalf of the young people and ourselves, we would also like to thank all the following sponsors for their donations; Home Decor, La Femme, Premier Prices, Woodies, Ger Gavin, Talbots, Guerin’s, The Watch Centre, Katanya’s Hair Salon, News Fayre, Jessica’s, Ray Walsh’s Chemist, Reddan’s Pub, Cinnamon Alley, Mary O’Sullivan, Rathurles, Nenagh; Macloon / O’Meara Academy of Irish Dance, Tadgh Flynn’s Jewellers, World of Wonder and The Foodhall.

The staff, along with three young members of Foróige Nenagh Youth Development Project attended the car boot sale at Nenagh rugby club, where they practised their sales skills and worked hard to raise much needed funds for their project.

We would like to thank everyone who supported us on the day.

The young people of Nenagh came out in force for an action packed Foróige Summer Programme where the choice of activities challenged the participants to their limits. It spanned July incorporating a well balanced mixture of indoor and outdoor pursuits, catering for a wide range of interests. These activities included, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, table quizzes, computer gaming tournaments, indoor soccer, volleyball, hockey, tag-rugby, crab soccer, and soccer –tennis, along with day trips that included swimming, canoeing, kayaking and pier jumping. We would like to extend a special thank you to the following volunteers who helped out with our Summer Programme this year; Angela Fogarty, Concepta Meagher, Trevor Whyte, Jamie Griffin, Mark O’Meara, Garda Tom Casey, Nenagh Community garda; Dave Rooney, Nenagh Arena; James Scott, FAI North Tipperary development officer; and Philip McKeon Volleyball Ireland development officer.

We will be concluding our Summer Programme with a three-day arts and crafts camp for those aged 10 to 12years. This will take place in Nenagh Town Hall from Tuesday August 9, to Thursday, August 11, from 2pm to 5pm. The fee is e15 and permission forms are available in The Town Hall. All enquiries to Bríd Bradshaw, Foróige youth officer, on 086-8038429.
