NINETEEN arrests were made in Thurles over the Christmas break, making it a busy holiday season for Thurles Gardai. From the 26th of December to January 2nd, gardai arrested 19 people on Public Order Offences, said a spokesperson for Thurles Garda Station.
The spokesperson said it's been a few years since this number of arrests were made in the town over a comparable period. Large numbers of people travelled to Thurles over the two long weekends, and some of the arrests related to disorderly conduct on the streets after alcohol was consumed.
In one incident, a number of car wing mirrors were broken on the night of New Year's Eve, on some of the sidestreets off Liberty Square. At least two arrests were made in relation to that incident, and one person is likely to receive an Adult Caution, said the spokesperson. The Adult Caution is a relatively new garda initiative introduced a few years ago to deter first-time offenders who come to the attention of the gardai, without bringing the case all the way to Court. Another person will appear in Thurles Court in relation to the broken mirrors. "It was a busy Christmas overall," added the spokesperson.
