McGrath Gives Guarded Welcome To Grant Scheme

South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has given a guarded welcome to the announcement of a grant scheme for Septic Tank Upgrades. “I am pleased that the Minister for the Environment has finally succumbed to the pressure, listened to common sense and introduced a grant scheme for the upgrade of Septic Tanks. This was the only logical step to take and I had been appealing to the Minister to introduce such a scheme at all stages of his bill’s passage through the Dáil and at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Environment” said Deputy McGrath

“We all want clean water and do not want to cause pollution but we could not have had a situation where Rural Dwellers had to meet the full cost of upgrading their septic tanks while urban systems were upgraded by the exchequer. Rural Dwellers are being charged for services that they simply do not receive and we have to have fair play.”

“This initial grant scheme will go some way to assist householders who need to upgrade their septic tanks, however, I would appeal to the Minister to consider larger amounts of grant aid in exceptional circumstances where the cost of upgrading the septic tank could be significantly greater.” concluded Deputy McGrath
