Excessive speeding is not a problem in Puckaun, Cllr Joe Hannigan has been told. The Independent councillor had asked that a sign showing drivers their speed be put in the village to encourage them to drive slowly.
However, senior engineer Michael Hayes revealed that the average speed was just 53km/h, “and the Gardai won’t set up a speed trap for that”.
A disappointed Cllr Hannigan pointed out that was just the average and it meant some drivers were faster and some were slower than the current 50km/h limit.
District manager Marcus O’Connor reiterated that speed was “not a huge problem”.
He said it would be an expensive option to place such signs permanently in villages.
Cllr Ger Darcy asked for a similar sign to be placed in Cloughjordan.
