A Shane Scully inspired JK Brackens got their championship season off to a flying start with a fine victory over rivals Drom-Inch in the MacLochlainn Roadmarkings Mid senior hurling championship at Holycross on Friday evening.

A very competitive outing, both sides had their periods of dominance throughout the game, but in the crucial last quarter the victors finished the stronger and managed to hold out for a real morale boosting win.

Scully’s teammate Shane Bourke might have grabbed all the headlines a few days earlier with his scoring blitz in Salthill for the Tipp seniors, but it was the centre forward who was to claim the lions share of the praise in this game – Scully bagged 1-10 in the game and was central to Brackens victory.

An uncompromising encounter with a fair deal of edge, there was no denying the commitment of both sides as they went at it from the off. Indeed, Drom-Inch centre back Eamon Buckley was forced off after only 4 minutes having taken a heavy tackle from Brackens Darren Owens – a tackle which resulted in a yellow card for the wing forward.

Drom-Inch made their mark on the scoreboard in Buckley’s absence with the impressive Johnny Ryan grabbing two huge long range frees along with one from David Butler. Shane Scully had Brackens first in the 10th minute but Micheal Butler cancelled this effort after Damien Young picked him out with a pin point puckout.

The complexion of the game changed in the 18th though when a Shane Scully rocket from a free was dispatched to the back of the net - Drom-Inch protested that the ball had gone over the bar, but the umpires were in no doubt and the goal stood.

It was the score which boosted Brackens confidence and they suddenly began to play with a bit of method and purpose. Still though Drom-Inch tacked on points through James Woodlock and David Butler while Scully and the influential Kevin Mulryan were on target for Brackens – the rangy fully forward was causing quite a few problems for the Drom-Inch defence.
