Oral cancer is increasing in Ireland. Every year over 300 people are diagnosed with it and over 100 die. That’s 2 people a week. On Wednesday 21st September over 700 dental surgeries (including the Old Quarter Dental Surgery in Limerick) will provide free oral cancer screening to the public. The screening takes a couple of minutes and doesn’t hurt. Early detection of oral cancer is vital for a successful outcome as most oral cancers are detected at an advanced stage. Early detection greatly improves treatment and survival rates
The most at risk include: Smokers, Heavy alcohol consumers, Use of alcohol and tobacco together, Those exposed to human papilloma virus (HPV0)
