'Black day' for Tipperary town as Wellworths shop closes on Main Street

Tipperary town has suffered yet another blow to its economy with the closure today of Wellworths, described as a retailing "institution" beloved of generations of local families.

The news broke this morning as the staff came into work. Martin Quinn, a local organiser of a march on October 20 next to save Tipperary town's economy and highlight its plight to politicians, said the staff were heartbroken to learn the news.

"They were very emotional and very upset," said Mr Quinn. Wellworths has been there a "lifetime" and sells mostly homeware, stationery, toiletries, and clothing. "It's a huge blow to the town, which has suffered so many blows already. In excess of 20 businesses have closed on the Main Street. "So, today is another black day for the town."

It's unclear how many staff are affected. A group is marching in Tipperary town on October 20th, led by Padraig Culbert. "It's an opportunity for people to come out and show their support for the town," added Mr Quinn. The group can be contacted through their Facebook page Tipperary Town @tippdevelop and using the hashtag #March4Tipp
