Guard of honour for tragic crash victim Tom Gleeson

Tributes have been paid to a Thurles native and GAA stalwart, who died in a tragic crash over the weekend.

Thomas Gleeson died in a single vehicle collision nearly four miles outside Cashel, on Friday night (April 6th).

It's understood the vehicle Mr Gleeson was driving was in a collision with a fence in Ardmayle, at around 11.30pm that evening.

The road was closed on Friday while diversions were put in place for traffic, to allow an examination of the scene by Garda forensic collision investigators.

His body was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to contact them at Cahir Garda Station on 052-744630, the Garda Confidential line on 1800-666111 or and garda station

Tributes have poured in from former club mates and colleagues for the avid GAA fan on the Moycarkey-Borris Supporters' Club Facebook page. Aged 51, Tom was from Gaile, Thurles, and represented his club at all levels and later immersed himself in coaching. The club will form a guard of honour the late Mr Gleeson in Moycarkey village tomorrow morning (Tuesday, April 10th) after Requiem Mass at 11.30am. Meet by the gates after Mass.

“On last Saturday morning our club community was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Thomas Gleeson in a car accident,” commented a club spokesperson.

“Tom was a lifelong stalwart of Moycarkey Borris GAA, always involved, always willing to help in every way possible. He played at every level underage, Minor, Under 21 and the Adult teams. Tom excelled as a Selector and team mentor after his days in the jersey elapsed. He was kind and encouraging to players as he passed on his passion for the club. He was a selector with several Championship winning teams in the club including the 2013 County Junior A Hurling winning team. He will be sadly missed on match days, training and all club activities. Our sincere sympathies to his wife Nuala, daughters Aideen and Bríd, granddaughters Mia and Layla, sisters, relatives and friends.
