Having been ordained on Friday in the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, Rev Fr Niall O'Riordan has celebrated his First Mass in Rome.

Thurles man Rev Fr Niall O'Riordan has celebrated his First Mass in the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia - just 100m from St Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Fr Niall was ordained on Friday in the magnificent Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, alongside three others, with over 200 Irish guests in attendance, mostly family and friends. The magnificent ceremony was followed by his First Mass which was a beautiful celebration with family members participating in the liturgy as well as Thurles native Fr Paul Cahill, and Thurles priests, Fr Vincent Stapleton, Fr Jim Purcell and Fr Martin Hayes. Fr Nialls parents Dan and Imelda, his brothers Raymond, David and James, his sister Anne, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends shared in the very special experience and were asked to pray for Niall as he embarks upon his priestly journey, which takes him to Slovakia in the immediate future.

Following his priestly formation in the seminary in Rome, Niall has now become an instrument of Gods message, the congregation heard, and his words of gratitude for all the support he has received throughout his formation were expressed with great humility and meaning. He was, he said, bowled over by the support, and added that he will never forget these remarkable days in his life. He hoped that those who had made the journey to Rome from all over the globe could be filled with many blessings and graces by having shared the experience.

Fr Niall will celebrate his first Irish Mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption in mid January and an open invitation is extended to everyone to come along to what will be a most joyous occasion in Thurles.
