Thomas Francis Waller
The murders of Thomas Waller and his sister-in-law Harriet Vereker on Sunday November 12, 1843 at Finnoe House near Borrisokane, will be the subject of the OHS opening lecture of the 2016-17 season this Monday, November 7.
The lecture takes place in the Abbey Court Hotel at 8.30pm and will be delivered by prominent local historian Danny Grace.
The Finnoe murders were greeted with shock at home and abroad, one British newspaper describing them as "one of the most fiendish and brutal attacks ever made in Ireland".
The talk will examine how the Wallers came to Finnoe, the story of the murders, their probable motives and the fallout from them. It will also look at the personalities involved and will place the murders in the context of crime in Tipperary at the time. The talk will be illustrated.
Danny Grace has written and spoken extensively on the history of County Tipperary. He has published books on the parish of Monsea and Killodiernan, the Famine in Nenagh Poor Law Union, and, more recently, the Centenary History of Kiladangan GAA Club. He is a regular contributor to the Tipperary Historical Journal and other local history publications.
