Powerful play 'Overshadowed' for Nenagh Arts Centre

Eva O’Connor’s play Overshadowed receives its Tipperary premier this weekend giving an insightful and powerful look at the world of eating disorders.

Playwright and performer O’Connor wrote the drama, drawing on her own experiences with anorexia and appears in the play as Caol, the bodysuit-wearing embodiment of anorexia, who torments lead character Imogene with her jibes and taunts.

Imogene used to be sparkly, vivacious and outgoing. She used to fancy lads, have curves and love chips. Recently however she has become withdrawn, gaunt, obsessed with exercise. The reason? Caol, her new “best friend”, who’s cast a dark shadow over Imogene’s life. Invisible to everyone except Imogene, Caol will not rest until Imogene has been reduced both emotionally and physically to a shadow of her former self. Combining O’Connor’s sharp new writing and physicality this piece aims to provoke compassion and debate around the subject of eating disorders, by separating the sufferer from the condition.

Overshadowed premiered at the Tiger Dublin Fringe 2015, winning the Fishamble Award for Best New Writing.

Overshadowed - Saturday 19th November, 8pm, tickets €16/€12.50
