CBS Thurles students achievements honoured

Prize Night is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the many skills and talents that students possess and as usual, a wide spectrum of achievements was recognised on Thursday night last in CBS Thurles.

There were awards for full attendance, academic excellence, Sport, Music, Construction and Art. Over 400 students, parents, teachers and invited guests were in attendance to applaud student successes.

In Basketball, there were awards for Patrick Collier and Sean Mockler while in Athletics Emmet Fogarty and Jack Ryan were named as Junior and Senior Athletes of the Year respectively. Jack Ryan-Casey was named as Junior Soccer Player of the Year while Jack Dolan took the Senior Soccer award. There were over 70 entries for the Parents’ Council-sponsored creative writing competition this year which was won by second year student Ben O’Driscoll. In Music, the talents of Darragh McCahey, Killian Cullinane, Christopher Carew and Gavin Murphy were recognised while Jack Donnelly and David Conway won the awards in the Art category.

Academic achievement was acknowledged with awards in all subject areas for junior and senior students. Special awards were presented to Eoin Purcell who achieved the school’s best Junior Cert last year and Mark Fortune who attained the maximum points in last year’s Leaving Certificate examinations. Congratulations to Emmet Fogarty who was named a Junior Student of the Year. Thomas Whelan won the award for the best Materials Technology project and Darragh Taylor, won the corresponding award for Construction Studies.

In Hurling, there were awards for Darragh Minogue, Sean Ryan, Liam McCormack, Luke Shanahan, Conor Horgan, Kevin Hayes, Jack Hickey, Devon Ryan, Ciaran Connolly and Bryan O’Mara. Indeed, the school had a hugely successful year on the GAA front securing the following titles; Munster Champions in Dean Ryan (U 16 ½ A Hurling) and White Cup (U 15 A Hurling), Rice Cup Champions (U 14 Hurling). County Champions in Fitzgerald Cup (U 17 Hurling) & First Year Hurling and U 15 Football Champions.

Attendance awards were presented to students from different year groups who had perfect attendance. A special award was presented to 6th year student Rory Fogarty who completed his secondary schooling without missing a day of school.
The guest speaker on the night was the Director of the Teaching Council, Mr. Tómas O Ruairc who congratulated all award winners.

He complimented parental involvement and encouraged students to be ambitious and use all the supports that are available in school. One of the highlights of the night is the award of the Thurles Credit Union Student of the Year Award. In recognition of their academic achievements, sporting contributions to school life and the overall leadership they have shown during their time in the school, Jack Hehir and Bryan O’Mara were named as joint winners of the Student of the Year.
