We were in Newtownshandrum on Friday night for the most recent instalment in the Ballyhoura Active series. Shandrum AC had changed the route from Last year and chopped a mile off of it. The race started near the grotto at the top hill on the way down to Newtownshandrum. The race was run in reverse to last years and as it started so high there was a lot of fast downhill running. But there was a little sting in the tail as there was a hill in the last half mile a lot of people found that tough but all agreed that it was a great route. Some said the heat was a factor as well but how can we complain we so seldom get heat. Michael Corbett st Finbarr’s AC took the win in 20.48 in warm conditions followed by Declan Guina West Limerick AC and 3rd was Finbarr O Dwyer Leevale AC. The Ladies were led home by Martina Kiely St Finbarr’s AC ran 24.06 2nd was Sinead Buckley North Cork AC and 3rd was Annette O Reilly Kilfinane AC. It was great to see local ladies doing so well and improving over the series, great new talent in the area growing with each race. Numbers were well up on last year and the stewarding was top class, so well done to Noel and all the crew in Shandrun AC.
Next Friday we are in Bruff for the An Bru AC 5 mile road race, this is turning out to be a real classic as a lot of people would say this is their favourite race in the series. The An Bru club is probably the largest athletics club in Limerick and have been running this race for the last four years and the they have been growing this race all the time. We expect that Declan Moore will be back to check out the local talent and hopefully the local boys will suit up and give him a run for his money. There is some great talent around and Michael Corbett from St Finbars AC might be back searching for another win. So Bruff is on this Friday this night the 29th of July at 7.30pm, we will have a break until the 17th of August after this as usual check out the Ballyhouraactive.com website for more details.
