The Irish Life Health National Masters Indoor Championships were held on Sunday the 11th of March in Athlone. Our three stand out athletes for track and field events made the trip up the country and all brought home individual medals. Dermot Hayes ran in the Men's O50 3,000m and 1,500m. In the 3,000m he had a superb race to claim Gold in a PB time of 9:32.22, the clear winner with 22 secs clear of Silver place. This was a fantastic result to add to Dermot's Outdoor O50 3,000m Gold that he won last summer. He also had a great race to place 4th in the 1,500m in 4:37.96. A great position after running such a hard race earlier in the day with the 3,000m. In the Men's O65 Liam O'Dwyer had a great Hugh Jump of 1.05 to secure Bronze. In the Men's 70+ Michèal O'Beirne won Bronze in the Shot Putt in 3.03. He also won Silver in the Weight for Distance 28 lbs in 1.51.


The Run for Wine 5k was held on Sunday the 11th of March in Kildare. The novelty of this race was each finisher got a bottle of wine at the finish which is a nice touch with the day being Mother's Day. Our Fit4Life Lady Naoimh Dooley ran very well to finish in a PB time of 28:46.


The County Juvenile Indoor Championships were held on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th of March at the Nenagh Indoor Stadium. We had 23 juveniles competing over the weekend which had to be rescheduled due to the recent storm. We kicked off on Saturday with the U9 Girls Ellisse Kelly, Belle Kelly and Muireann O’Neill. All competed well but no medals. In the Boys U9 Niall Quirke won a Bronze in the 60m and we picked up our first relay medals when the team of Billy Kilmartin, Cian Buckley, Niall Quirke and Jack Ferncombe got the Bronze medals. In the Girls U10 we had more success with Sophie Moynihan winning Bronze in the 300m and the relay team of Sophie, Sarah Meehan, Clodagh Kilmartin and Laura Hales collected hard won Bronze medals in the 4 x100m. Oisin O’Neill and Conor O’Donnell competed well in the Boys U10 but were out of luck. In the Girls U11 Emma Kingston won a Silver medal in the 60m. Ruby Kelly, Brid Quirke and Roisin Ferncombe also competed well but were out of the medals. Shannon O’Grady and Niamh Buckley competed in the Girls U12 but were out of luck. On Sunday Shane Buckley was again crowned County Champion when winning the 600m in a new PB of 1:42. He also won the Silver medal in the Long Jump. Tadgh O’Donnell also competed in the Boys U12 but was out of the medals. In the Girls U13 Millie Kelly showed good form to win the Silver medal in the 600m and Paula Quirke ran a great race to win the Bronze. The two girls combined with Niamh Buckley and Ruby Kelly to get the Silver medals in the relay. Juvenile training continues each Tuesday and Friday at 7pm.


The British Inter Counties Cross Country Championship was held on Saturday the 10th of March. Club athlete Kevin Moore who is living in England ran a great race to improve by roughly 20 places on last year's race to place 61st and was third scorer on the Sussex team that placed 7th overall.


The debut of the Kilsheelan 10 Mile Road Race was held on Sunday the 11th of March, like it's sister 10k race it was a very hilly and challenging course. We had 4 athletes compete. First home was 23rd John Kelly 1:07:52, next we had 54th Teresa O'Connor 1:15:08 and crossing the line together was 64th Mairead Julian and 65th Brid Quirke both running 1:16:49. A special well done to Brid who made her debut over this distance today and who started running with our Fit4Life group in January 2017.


The Munster Juvenile Indoor Championships were held on Sunday the 25th in Nenagh Indoor Stadium. We had 5 juveniles competing and all did very well in such a competitive field at Provincial level. In the Girls U13 600m we had two girls compete 21st Paula Quirke 2:06.38 and 28th Millie Kelly 2:13.74. We also had two girls compete in the Girls U14 800m with Kate Ferncombe placing very well in 5th in 2:39.55 and 14th Orla Ryan 2:45.02. Shane Buckley was our sole representative in the Boys category. He had a fantastic race to win Silver in the Boys U13 600m in 1:45.94.


The Operation Transformation 5k in conjunction with Thumbs Up For Tomàs was held on Saturday the 24th of February. Well done to Kathleen O Brien, Martina Butler and Patricia Moloney who took part.


The Templemore Fit4Life Track and Trail 4 Mile was held on Sunday the 25th of February and was through Templemore park and started and finished on the athletics track. We had 3 athletes compete. First home for the club was 4th Paudie Coen, followed by 7th John Kelly 24:43 and our own Fit4Life Lady 65th Martina Butler 37:32.


The Brooks Armagh 5K International Road Race celebrated it's 28th anniversary of this iconic event that is now ranked as the best and most popular road race in the world. This is through soo many sub 15 minute runners in the race. The race was held on Thursday the 15th of February and hosted by Armagh Athletic Club and attracted athletes from the highest elite standards from all over the world including the UK, various European countries and the United States. The race consisted of 5 laps of The Mall 1000m circuit and the course is flat, fast and furious. Our Kevin Moore was indeed fast and furious over this course to run a fantastic 15:05, 4 days after his Silver National Intermediate Cross Country medal. Well done to Kevin who is on fantastic form this past year. He deserves all the success. He trains hard and is always down to earth and makes time for everybody. We are proud, as a club to have a representative like him.
