Roscrea is gearing up for a festival of walking and heritage this Saturday, organised by the Roscrea Trail Blazers.

The walks which form part of the festival are for every level and range from the gentle stroll around Glasderry Lake to the more energetic Obama Trail from near Moneygall over the Devil’s Bit. All walks will be led by local people who will show you parts of Roscrea that most of us rarely get to see. Each walk will also include a talk about the rich heritage that one of Ireland’s oldest towns has to offer. Lead organiser, Cathal Mc Nicholas said this week that he was really looking forward to what promises to be a great weekend. Organisers in particular want to encourage the young an more senior members within our community to join us on our walks. Cathal was also grateful for the support of local sponsors including Roscrea Credit Union, Tesco’s and Mulrooneys Gala, without which the festival would not be possible.

Manager of Roscrea Credit Union and Chairman of the Roscrea Enhancement Group Brian King said that projects like this are exactly what the Enhancement Committee love to see happening.

Brian said the the Credit Union got behind the project at the later end of last year and were delighted to see the project coming together. “The fesival is a perfect example of local people demonstrating great leadership to make something really positive happen that will be of enormous benefit to the community and hopefully in time will become a major annual event that will also be of a major benefit to the local economy,” said Mr King.

Registration for each walk will take place at the Scouts Hall, Roscrea, where refreshment will be served after each walk takes place. The festival promises to be a most enjoyable experience, and all participants are guaranteed a great welcome.
