The results of the 2012 photography competition promoted by the Credit Unions of Tipperary and Tipperary Libraries were announced at a function held in Thurles Library recently.
Donal Scannell, C.E.O. of Thurles CU, and Mary Guinan-Darmody, Tipperary Libraries, both expressed their delight at the success of the competition, the theme of which was “Hidden Tipperary” and which attracted more than 600 entries.
Both stated that the competition was viewed by them as a great opportunity for Tipperary camera enthusiasts to highlight aspects of the many and varied scenic locations in the county which are often hidden from the casual visitor.
The high quality of the photographs submitted posed a major headache for the adjudication panel, “but a most enjoyable kind of headache” said Tom Noone, Thurles CU’s representative on the organising committee.
From the final short list, 12 photographs, including the four winning entries, were selected for the annual calendar produced by the organisers and copies of which are available in credit union offices and Branch libraries around the county.
Tipperary Libraries have also mounted an exhibition of a selection of the photographs which will visit a number of locations.
Present at the function were Donal Scannell, Thurles CU; Deirdre Kavanagh and Michael Fogarty, Templemore CU; Brendan Ryan, Tipperary CU; Brian King, Roscrea CU; Mary Guinan-Darmody and John O’Gorman, Tipperary Libraries, all of whom were commended for the time and effort invested in making the competition such a resounding success.
