Cashel Arts Festival - mind, body, and soul

The author of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Absolutist read from his latest novel This House is Haunted, and took questions from the audience afterwards

Opening the 10-day long festival of music, literature, and art, Chairperson Rebecca Lenehan said it was a great honour to have John as the opening guest speaker at this year’s festival. The winner of this year’s competition to design the artwork for the festival brochure is graphic design student Malgorzata Rosenfeld.

“Every year the Festival Committee sets out to build on our strengths and improve upon the year before,” said Ms Lenihan. “Cashel has a strong sense of community, and Cashel Arts Festival needs to be at the centre of that community.” The festival committee has set up the Create Café in the Heritage Centre on the Main Street, with a different arts and crafts workshop each day. Each event has feedback forms so you can give your opinion.

The festival culminates in a Finale Concert on Sunday (Nov 17) in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist. An evening of uplifting music by ‘4 in a Bar’ - Ireland’s leading male voice harmony group - is promised, with ‘The Festival Choir’ led by Martin Barrett of the Cork School of Music, and ‘Cool Ceol’, a Tipperary Regional Youth Service project.

Some of the highlights of this year’s programme include ‘Alone it Stands’, the now legendary story set on October 31st 1978 when Munster Rugby played the All Blacks . This John Breen directed theatre production takes place on Friday at 8pm in Brú Ború.

Another must see is the annual Food & Craft Fair, which goes ahead in the Cashel Palace Hotel Car Park on Sunday (Nov 17), between 11am and 4pm. Browse the wide range of delicious artisan and locally produced food, and experience the craft displays and demonstrations. There is something here for all the family. Non-stop entertainment will include the Michael John Ryan Youth Orchestra, Polaroid Picture, 2BU street entertainment and much more. This event is free so come along!
