Now that the county officers. as well as the senior hurling panel, have returned from their well-deserved trip to San Diego I expect the business of the G.A.A. in the county can continue.
Probably the most pressing issue is sorting out the matters arising from the West convention.
The main matter arising is the election of chairman. To refresh minds after the Christmas break may be necessary.
Because the outgoing chairman was a
candidate for the position, he vacated the chair and invited one of the Life Presidents, Mick Frawley, to take the chair for the election. Mick Frawley proceeded to disqualify Mattie Finnerty's candidature on the basis of the three-year rule for chairman. A second candidate, Joe Power, withdrew his name from the contest and Roger Kennedy, as the last man standing, was declared elected and he took the chair.
While all this was happening there was much debate and plenty of contributions from the floor. Because of disagreement
with the ruling of the ad hoc chairman, Cashel delegate, Pat O'Donoghue, called for a suspension of standing orders. His
motion was seconded by another Cashel delegate, Aiden Hynes. The motion wasn't accepted or voted on.
Following the convention Cashel King Cormac's lodged an objection to the county board on the failure to have their motion accepted.
County Management met on the issue and decided to meet with three of the officers of the West board, secretary, Jerry Ring, treasurer, Sean Bradshaw and vice-chairman, Joe Power, in order to try to resolve the issue. Apparently it wasn't possible to set up a meeting with the three officers before the county officers departed to San Diego.
Because of the failure to meet, County Management issued a directive to the West Board before departure, that the West Board,
as constituted before the West convention, would remain in power until such time as county management address the issueagain on return from San Diego.
So, at time of writing the status quo pre-convention stands. It is expected that County Management will meet on the matter sometime this week and make another attempt to meet with the above three officers of the West board.
