Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. 11
Richmond R.F.C.12
On Sunday Kilfeacle welcomed Richmond RFC to Morrissey Park for their meeting in the league.
The first 5 minutes were played in the Kilfeacle’s 22 but after 6 minutes the home side encroached on the Richmond 22 and won a penal
ty, converted by Shane Luby. No sooner had Kilfeacle taken the lead when they gave away a penalty in a dangerous area, which the visitors duly converted.
After 18 minutes another well taken penalty by Shane Luby saw the homeside restore their 3 point advantage. However, once again, Kilfeacle gave away a penalty which the visitors duly punished them for by converting.
In the 33 minute, an excellent lineout move straight off the training pitch saw Shane Flavin finish expertly in the corner for a try. The angle of the kick was too much for Stephen Touhy. Kilfeacle defended well for the remainder of the half with players such as Alan O’Mahony, Stephen Flood and Shane Flavin having a large impact, as were James Mullane, Sean Leahy, Shane Casey and Damien Gavin. Not to be out done the backs started to move the ball well with Darren Lowry showing good signs that he is cementing his place in the team. Charles Walsh and Jack O’Sullivan looked very good in both defence and attack for the home side. When the referee’s whistle sounded at halftime the score showed that Kilfeacle were leading by 11 points to 6.
At the beginning of the second half the visitors were awarded a penalty which they duly scored to reduce Kilfeacle’s lead to just two points. For the next 20 minutes Kilfeacle had the upper hand but between errors and some last ditch defending by Richmond saw the score remain at 11 points to 9 in favour of Kilfeacle. With just 4 minutes remaining Kilfeacle were awarded a penalty in a kickable position and opted to take the kick. Shane Luby kicked at his target and what was to follow was confusion. The home fans cheered as they thought it was over, the Richmond players remonstrated with the referee as they thought it was wide, and the linesmen raised their flags in unison to signal that 3 points had been scored. This meant that Kilfeacle were now 5 points ahead, at least it did until the referee over turned the decision. The score remained at 11-9 but with 1 minute remaining Richmond scored a penalty from a long way out to lead for the first time in the game. Kilfeacle tried as hard as they could to keep the ball alive and work their way into a scoreable position but their opponents kept them at bay to seal a very important victory.
Kilfeacle seconds defeat Fethard.
