Minor Win a Lift to Tipp. Spirits
hree weeks on, nothing related to the double draws. The Cats did not so much come through the backdoor, as break it down for a sixth in seven years. Tipp. minors took a first in five with impressive emphasis. The sides that had survived on late frees were way out of it this time. Our minor title adds traditional identity to the intermediate success. Thoughts turn now to the county semi-finals at the Stadium, with all Mid and Mid-West encounters on the bill.
Eamonn O’Shea deserves early billing in any review of the weeks developments. His acceptance of the Tipp mandate is very welcome on various grounds. It is also, perhaps, somewhat of a surprise. He, like Liam Sheedy and Michael Ryan , left on a note of triumph. Many, or most, might have seen that as the ideal point of exit. Comebacks aren’t always blessed with recapture of glory - there’s been one extremely obvious precedent for a unique second term, but we won’t go into that! O’Shea merits goodwill on his decision, after initial indications of a negative response to Board approaches. He knows what he is facing, the picking up of a downcast camp, not so much consoled by repeated Munster dominance. Set to be Taoiseach where he was a Tanaiste, he has to re-invigorate the party - and maybe restore it to better discipline.
