Borrisokane fell at the first hurdle in their quest for Munster Championship honours in the Junior A football quarter final on Sunday. With home advantage in the driving rain, Borris also had numerical advantage for a lot of the second half but were outplayed by a more competent Cappamore side.
The Limerick champions were superior in most sectors with a tight defence and a decent set of forwards. Andy Murphy was the pick of the bunch in attack with Tommy O’Donoghue, Bill Creamer and John Ryan also to the fore. Borrisokane are much better than this performance suggested and tried hard throughout. Andrew Austin and Enda Forde moved forward at every opportunity but Borris allowed themselves to be sucked out from the danger area leaving swathes of unoccupied space in front of goal. Philip Austin and Tadhgie Slevin worked hard but couldn’t convert their efforts into scores.
Borrisokane made a reasonable start and should have been in a better position but poor shooting in the opening three minutes let the Limerick champions off the hook. Tommy O’Donoghue opened the scoring for Cappamore after four minutes from a neat John Ryan handpass but Andrew Austin set up Brian Davis for a quick response. Cappamore danger man Andy Murphy popped over two points in the 8th and 9th minutes, one from a free, and in the 14th deceived the home defence when his speculative shot found its way into the net giving Cappamore a 1-3 to 0-1 lead.
Philip Austin opened his account with a pointed free midway through the second half and added another in the 26th minute but every score was a struggle for Borrisokane and the visitors were playing much more fluidly. If anything, the Tipp champions were trying a little too hard and using the extra pass when shots were on. Cappamore finished strongly with Murphy, Tommy O’Donoghue and John Ryan combining for the latter to fire over a point on the stroke of half time to give Cappamore a comfortable 1-4 to 0-3 lead.
Borrisokane needed a quick start to retrieve this game but it was the impressive Andy Murphy who punished two Borris indiscretions from placed balls on the resumption. Borris were rocked on their heels when Eoin O’Donoghue found Colm Doherty in space for Cappamore’s second goal after just seven minutes of the second half.
Facing an eight point deficit, Borrisokane introduced Sean Hartnett and Conor Darcy but the craftier Cappamore men held tough. The half back line of Brian and Diarmuid Sheehy and Bobby O’Connell were particularly effective in pushing Borrisokane back into their own half. In the 46th minute Cappamore forward Declan Deere picked up his second yellow card for a challenge on Philip Austin and very quickly Denis Keating followed his colleague to the early shower. The numerical advantage didn’t help Borrisokane, however, and it was that man Murphy who extended Cappamore’s lead to nine points with another pointed free.
Borrisokane pressed hard in the final minutes and had decent efforts from Philip Austin and Peter McSherry cleared. Austin managed a point from a free with seven minutes remaining but Borris really needed a goal and the Cappamore defence was not in any mood for generosity. Unbelievably the third red card of a very benign contest was flashed in the 58th minute when Borrisokane’s Tadhgie Slevin was also shown a second yellow. Conor Forde made the long journey upfield for a consolation score in the dying moments but it was just too little and far too late for Borrisokane on this occasion.
