Samantha named as Student Ambassador

Local Thurles woman Samantha O’Dwyer has received an opportunity of a lifetime after being named international Student Ambassador in Brisbane.

Samantha O’Dwyer is set to become the first Irish Student Ambassador representing both country and city since the Student Ambassador programme began 6 years ago.

She was named as one of the 36 students from 34 countries appointed to the position at a Ceremony held in Brisbane City Hall on April 4th.

Samantha’s name was chosen out of over 250 applicants this year. It will see students in her position aim to promote Brisbane as a study destination to their home countries. The Thurles born local will not only rely the news and events home but will also see her sharing her own experiences and culture with other students around her.

Speaking during the Ceremony Lord Mayor of Brisbane Graham Quirk outlined the opportunities that will be available for the lucky Ambassadors “Their role will see them enjoying many quintessential Brisbane experiences as well as volunteering at multicultural events and assisting with the hosting of official visiting delegations.

During her time there Samantha will be an international advocate for the city during this years G20 leaders summit.

Since its creation the programme has seen over 75,000 international students study in the city. Other nationalities to be represented by Student Ambassadors in the City include students from Japan, China, USA, Germany, Iran, India and Zimbabwe.

The programme is currently in its sixth year since its creation in 2008 by Brisbane city marketing team and has seen over 158 students across the world participate in the ambassador programme, making her achievement even bigger as she will be Ireland’s first Student ambassador representing her country in the city.

Samantha’s work there will see her post a number of stories and updates of her adventures through online blogs, along with posts on social media sites like facebook.
