Roscrea Scouts - Spring News

The activities came thick and fast for all the members of the Roscrea Scout Group during the end of spring.

St.Patricks Day saw nearly 100 members marching in the Parade; the Group were delighted to be recognised for their contribution to the Event in the award received. On March 23rd, despite the cold conditions the Scout Section enjoyed a great days Canoeing and Kayaking on the River Barrow near Graiguenamanagh with Charlie Horan (Gowiththeflow Adventures).

The following weekend our Thursday Beaver Section as part of their Chief Scout Award enjoyed an action packed activity weekend in Srahan jointly with the Rathdowney Beavers. This is Rathdowney’s first year and it was great to share an activity with them. The weekend of April 4th to 6th saw nearly 200 Cubs from 10 different Scout Groups around the Slieve Bloom Scout County converge on Srahan for the County Cub Camp. The Cubs attending despite the rain and mud had a great time; enjoying an Intercultural Trade Fair, Pioneering, Orienteering, Backwoods Survival Skills, Games and a Campfire. The Camp was attended by both our Tuesday and Thursday Cub Packs.

The first weekend of the Easter Holidays saw four of the Group’s Sections in action. The Venture Section went to Ballaghmore to practice their Pioneering Skills; building an excellent Monkey Bridge.

The Tuesday and Wednesday Beaver Sections attended a two night camp in Srahan jointly with the Beavers from Durrow for another action packed weekend. Eight of the Beaver Scouts completed their Chief Scout Awards on the Camp. The older Scouts travelled to Kerry for a hiking weekend; in addition to hikes around Tralee and Castlegregory, the Scouts & their leaders (18 people in total) successfully overcame the weather conditions to climb Carauntoohill. These few weeks were unfortunately tinged with sadness with the sudden passing of Carlos Simplico. Carlos had only recently signed up to be a leader in our Group where both his daughters were members of the Thursday Cubs.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Carlos’s family at this time.
