As recently announced, Bourney/Bournea Reaching Out are hosting a lecture by Professor William J.Smyth, a native of the parish, on “The Great Irish Famine in Bourney and District”, at Lismackin Hall on May 13 at 8pm.
All are welcome, there is no admission charge. There will be a raffle for three books by local authors: The Atlas of the Great Irish Famine which Professor Smyth co authored; Farewell to the Thatch and the Whitewash, by Jim Kennedy, and from Roscrea to New Guinea, by Liam Doran.
There were no walks last weekend – as is normal on a bank holiday. This weekend, the Ramblers are taking part in the Dunmore East Walking Festival – have a look at www.dunmorewalks.com – walk number 2 – looks like a super walk. Contact Joe Coughlan to book your place. A leaders meeting will take place next week to agree the next three months walks, which will be posted on the website shortly. Remember, new members must do 2-3 short walks before going on an intermediate or long walk. More photos have been uploaded on our Facebook page (www.roscrearamblers.com)

On Friday May 16th our school will host a concert in St. Cronan’s Parish Church. The concert will feature the school choir and musicians along with invited guests among them past pupils Breffni Fitzpatrick and Colm Brussels. We will be joined by musicians and singers from Coláiste Phobal and Cistercian College Roscrea. We would be so delighted if you could join us in St. Cronan’s for this hour long celebration of our school. The event is a showcase for our newly formed choir along with the best of local talent.
On Friday next we will launch the Roscrea & District Events Guide. The full colour brochure outlines a number of exciting events that will take place in Roscrea this year. It is the first time that Roscrea has had a marketing promotion of this type and it is envisaged that it will be a great success. Chairman Brian King encouraged all local groups to contact him as soon as possible.
