2014 County Fleadh in Ballina a success

Once again there was a great Fleadh an Chontae in Ballina surpassing 2013. Thanks to the local community and host Branch Nenagh Ormond.

The festival started off Friday 9th May in Quay Arts Centre with musicians from Clare Fleadh and Tipperary Fleadh. On Sunday 11th May in Lakeside there was a good afternoon of set dancing with Johnny Reidy Ceili Band. On Monday there was the Primary School Irish Drama Competiton for the Seosamh Mac Gabhann Cup in Bun Scoil. Parents and friends enjoyed some great entertainment with the overall winners being Nenagh Gaelscoil with runners up from Ballina who put on a fantastic performance. On Tuesday there was an enjoyable Trad Session in Liam O’Riains.

On Wednesday there was a good night of set dancing in Anchor Bar, Killaloe. In O’Donovans Ballina there was a smashing surprise celebration for our County Treasurer, Joe Troy, who has been Treasurer for 37 years. Donnchadh O’Cinneide lavished praise on Joe and had a lovely booklet printed with his life story and photos of various events in his life. He presented Joe with a solid rynhart statue and his wife Noreen with a bouquet of flowers for keeping it a secret. Joe was also County Delegate to Munster for many years and later for 20 years he was Munster Delegate to the Ard Comhairle until 2007. Joe was Joint Treasurer at the Five Fleadhanna na hEireann in Clonmel 1992/93/94 and 2003/04. Joe is still going strong as Treasurer of County and keeping record of the County trophies for the yearly County Fleadh. He is current Hon., President of Comhairle na Mumhan. Family and friends congratulated Joe on his wonderful achievement.

On Thursday there was a good singing session with Fear an Ti Micheal Hackett in J.D’s Ballina and on Friday the official opening by Donnchadh O’Cinneide in the Bun Scoil Bheal an Atha with concert by the All Ireland Scoraiocht winners Newport and Kincora Call Group.

On Saturday there was lots of music on the street and busking competition, winners of which were the O’Donoghue Family and the Slattery and McGrath Families. Followed by trad sessions after 10pm in O’Riains, Goosers, Mollys, Flanagans and Mills. On Sunday at 11:30 am there was a very uplifting Aifreann Traidisunta in Seipeal St. Lua Ballina with Rev. J. O’Rahilly.

A big thank you to the school principle Margaret O’ Sullivan and staff for the use of their facilities, to all who helped at competitions clearks, door stewards etc. and anyone who gave a hand to give the week of festivities.
