A group of local retailers have launched ‘Love Roscrea’ a campaign to encourage shopping in locally owned businesses.

The campaign will highlight the benefits of shopping local and will offer the people of Roscrea special deals and incentives in return for supporting local shops.

A draw with the grand prize of €500 worth of vouchers from participating stores will kick start the campaign.

After witnessing the rapid change in the town’s retail landscape in the last decade, from one of local businesses with owner-occupiers to one with faceless chain stores and large foreign based multinationals, the group got together to take action.

They aim to keep Roscrea a ‘home town’ as opposed to a ‘clone town’ and stop any further decline in locally owned and run businesses in Roscrea.

A recent RGDATA report by economist Jim Power proved that when money is spent in locally owned businesses it is worth up to 3 times more to the local economy i.e the money that is spent locally stays locally.

This invariably leads to greater job creation and a more vibrant and happy town for all inhabitants. Brian Colclough, a member of the group and owner of Bernie’s Supervalu Roscrea said “locally owned shops provide steadier local employment, source more local produce & provide greater support and sponsorship to local communities.

“They give the consumer convenience & choice. We invest more in our businesses using local services and suppliers, spend considerably more through local advertising & most of all we have a true sense of commitment to the local community.”

The prize draw is just the beginning of the ‘Love Roscrea’ campaign; there are plans for exciting events, great deals and incentives in the coming months.

The campaign also has the support of the local Chamber of Commerce & Roscrea Enhancement Group.
