The New Inn Women’s group celebrated their twentieth birthday with a celebration at Chez Hans Restaurant, Cashel on Tuesday night last.
On the night the chairperson Helen Fitzgerald gave a special word of welcome to Mary O’ Donnell, Anne O’ Dwyer, and Sandy Tompkins who formed the group, and to all past and present members who were involved in the club. A special tribute was paid to the late Joan Moore RIP who was a former secretary a valued member and friend to everyone. The chairperson outlined the activities and achievements of the club. It is a very active and vibrant club with over thirty members. It is involved in social, educational and recreational activities. The club has taken trips abroad to Vienna, Prague, Barcelona, New York, Berlin, Paris and London. It has gone to various shows including Wicket, Mama Mia, Blood Brothers and many more. The educational side ranges from Computer courses, Interior Design, Art classes, Yoga, Pilates,
Personal Development and Health Checks which were funded by the Tipperary ETB. The club has fundraised for various charities including South Tipperary Hospice, The Nagle Centre, and many other local charities. The club runs from September to May each year. It organises a Treasure hunt, Bowling, Hill walks and other outings during the summer months.Mary O’ Donnell spoke and said that in April 1995 Anne, Sandy and herself decided to form a women’s group and spoke to Mary Frances Barron about their idea.
The suggestion was enthusiastically supported and with her help the first meeting took place in Barron’s Lounge New Inn. She gave particular thanks to the late Betty Barron Rooney RIP who was involved in a similar group in Dublin. She gave advice and helped with the initial setting up of the group. She is delighted to see how well the group has developed since 1995 and wish them well in the future. The New Inn Women’s group meet on the third Tuesday of every month in the Community Hall New Inn and new members are always welcome.
