Templemore’s Fire Station is to undergo a new lease of life with a E1 million investment, heard Tipperary Co. Council.
Cllr Jim Ryan said Tipperary’s Fire Crews are the “the best in the country” and have won numerous awards.
However, it came to national attention before Christmas that the Dept. of the Environment was planning to a reduction of one Fire Fighter per callout. Cllr Ryan said the crews are already under severe stress and putting their lives at risk, without reducing their numbers even further. “They put in trojan work. They are paid per callout. This decision has been slammed by the Fire and Emergency Services Association. Will this Council follow that directive? There’s a genuine fear out there that this could have serious implications,” said Cllr Ryan.
Cllr Joe Bourke said it was “wonderful that over E1m has been spent on Templemore Fire Station.” However, the original site is “quite tight”. “It might make sense to look at expanding the site,” said Cllr Bourke.
