Councillor John “Rocky” McGrath has confirmed that Newport library room has been brought one step closer to fruition following the delivery of over 1,000 books from Thurles library.
The Lowry Team councillor confirmed that the room secured in Newport Community Centre has been fully fitted out, with shelving works now completed, for the voluntary library.
Cllr McGrath stated: “As a former chairman of Tipperary Libraries I have been fighting for a fully-fledged, new library for Newport town for some time. Unfortunately, the funding for this project has not been forthcoming and as a result we have been looking at alternatives to provide a book loan service to the people of Newport town.
“Thankfully with the co-operation of Newport Community Centre and Thurles library we now have a fantastic room, central in the town and a fantastic stock of books. Given that the full stock of books has been received and the facility is nearly ready it is hoped that we will have our library open very soon.
“This library room will be a valuable asset to the town of Newport. It will be a hugely beneficial facility for all of the children and schools in the town, and I hope it will go some way towards advancing and promoting reading, and improving literacy levels. Now books will be readily and freely available to all in our town.”
