Work has started on Nenagh’s new town park and revamped swimming pool on the Dublin road. The pool’s gym facility closed last week and will not reopen until January 2014, and contractors have moved on site to start the preparatory work on the development.

Town manager Marcus O’Connor told the Tipperary Star that the bridge across the Nenagh River that leads to the pool is being strengthened to allow it take heavy machinery. This bridge will be off-limits to the public and a new pedestrian bridge is to be put in place.

The town council was asked to carry out a fish survey on the river, and, last week, contractors were stunning fish and moving them downstream as the area is a spawning ground for the lamprey.

Meanwhile, Mr O’Connor revealed that the pool will not now close on October 5 as expected, but will stay open until Christmas as the contractor can work on other parts of the project.

The work has been welcomed by Cllr Lalor McGee, who made the park a priority of his election campaign.
