Double Family Celebrations

On June 26, 1963 the wedding ceremony of local lady, Marie Connolly overshadowed the first visit to Ireland of an American President, John F Kennedy! Marie celebrated her marriage to Willie Moran in St. Flannan’s Church on that ‘historic’ day. Little did her teenage brother Séamus know, on that memorable day, that he too would emigrate to the US and as an ambassador for Traditional Irish Music would, within half a century, have achieved such honour and success in his adopted country. As Marie and Willie prepare to celebrate their Golden Jubilee with their three sons – Donal, Liam and Pádraig (only daughter, Helena Brazil died in a tragic accident some years ago) and extended family members, Séamus has just been announced as one of ten recipients of the 2013 National Heritage Fellowship Awards in the US. This is the highest honour the US Government can grant to a traditional artist and recognition of a lifetime dedication to traditional Irish music as performer, teacher and cultural advocate. The award, which will be presented at the Library of Congress in Washington DC on Wednesday, September 25 also comes with a 25,000 dollar one-time award as well. We extend our good wishes and congratulations to Marie, Willie and Séamus.
