All Ireland Title For Ballina Handballers - On Sunday last Ballina Handball Club members, - Fergal Collins, Martin Mc Inerney, Mike Carroll, Ger Coonan and John Mc Quaid – won the Intermediate Inter Club All Ireland title by defeating thee Leinster Champions, Coolboy from Wicklow. It was a rather hectic day for the players who travelled to Kells for the semi-final and following victory there went on that same evening to Kingscourt in Cavan for the final. Well done to Fergal, Martin, Mike, Ger and John!
Young Ballina Boy Wins “Gold” - Finn McGeever represented Ballina Primary School recently at the Munster Schools’ Swimming competitions. Finn, who is the youngest son of Roisin and Charlie, Derrycastle won Gold in two competitions – 50m Butterfly and 50m Front Crawl.
Congratulations to Finn and we wish him the best of luck in the All Ireland finals that take place in Galway this coming weekend.
Santa In Town - On this Saturday, December 10th a most welcome person, - Santa – will visit Mc Keogh’s Hardware from 2pm to 4pm with lots of gifts for the children of the district. Proceeds from this event are in aid of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.
Careers Information Evening - A careers information evening for parents of Leaving Certificate students at St Anne’s Community College, Killaloe will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 7pm. This evening is mainly aimed at parents that are encountering the whole third level ‘dilemma’ for the first time.
Tidy Towns Events - Ballina Tidy Towns committee invites you to the illumination of the community Christmas Tree and singing of Carols on this Thursday, December 8th at 7pm. This event will take place in the central flower bed area opposite Mills’Bar/T.J’s Angling Centre.
At 8pm the presentation of the Ballina Local Environmental Awards (BLEA) will take place in Flanagan’s-on-the-Lake.
Scouting Activities - Beaver Scouts from all over County Clare, including both Killaloe Beaver Sections travelled had their Christmas outing to Turroe Pet Farm in Loughrea on Saturday last. All enjoyed the experience of feeding the animals, taking part in games and of course, meeting Santa. Twenty cubs from the Tuesday Cub Section had a lively two-night indoor camp in Srahane, Co. Laois last weekend. Good weather conditions on Saturday meant that they were out and about from early morning grass tobogganing and in the afternoon they hiked the lower Sliabh Bloom forestry trails, made a range of Christmas crafts and finished the evening with Cubs’ entertainment around the campfire.
Killaloe Library Activities - Christmas Crafts for adults will take place at Killaloe Library from 1pm to 3pm on December 9th and 16th. At the first workshop you will have the opportunity of creating your own Christmas Cards while on the following Friday you can make special Christmas table arrangements. Both events are facilitated by Nathalie el-Baba. For reservations please contact library personnel or call 376062.
Debating successes - Congratulations to St. Anne’s Community College debating team of Claudia Kinahan, Audrey Chew and Sean Hayes, winners in the County final of the Mental Health Ireland Public speaking competition.
They will now represent Clare in the Regional finals, which take place in the New Year. Well done also to their teacher Jo Mc Donnell.
The College’s ‘gaelgóirí’ under the guidance of their teacher, Marion O’Donovan won the first round of the Gael Linn Debating Competition. Congratulations to Alison O’Riordan, Orla Watson and Ellen Collins.
Scholarship Recipients - Management and staff at St. Anne’s Community College are very proud of three of their former students from the Class of 2011 who were recently awarded Third level Scholarships - Patrick Denning, Christopher Balfe and Ruadhraí McGeever.
Patrick, Who Was Awarded A J.p. Mc Manus All Ireland Scholarship, Is Currently Studying Biomedical Engineering At Imperial College In London: Christopher, Recipient Of An Entrance Exhibition Award At Trinity College Is Studying Medicine While Ruadhraí, An Engineering Student At Ucg Was Awarded A Ucg Sports Scholarship.
Apostolic Works Fundraiser - Killaloe-Ballina Apostolic Works Society will hold its annual Cake and Craft sale in the Molua Centre on Sunday, December 18th from 10.30am to 1pm. Donations of cakes and saleable items will be greatly appreciated.
Ballina Gaa - Congratulations to Stephen O’Brien who was selected Minor Footballer of the Year in the North Tipperary Awards. Stephen visited Ballina Primary School recently with the Tommie Markham Cup, much to the delight of staff and young children.
The annual Firewood Auction will be held at Ballina GAA Complex on this Sunday, December 11th.
Badminton - At the recent U.11 Munster Inter Counties Badminton tournament, three young people from the local Ballina-Killaloe Badminton club represented Clare – Daniel and Aisling O’Meara and Linda Daly. After a hard fought contest they were runners-up to Cork by a narrow margin.
In the U.13 event, Rosaleen and Anna Ryan were also in runners-up position.
Coaches Lesley and Michael Carey are quite proud of the performance of the young people. They wish to thank the management of St. Anne’s Community College for the ongoing use of the College Hall for training purposes.
