Award-Winning Author At Thurles Library
The International Best-selling author Monica McInerney will give a public talk in Thurles library this week. The Australian-born, Dublin-based author, who has published nine novels, will offer insights and anecdotes about the writing life at a talk in Thurles on Thursday, December 8th at 7 p.m. She will also offer tips and advice to new and aspiring writers. Her talk should be of interest to readers and writers alike.
Monica McInerney’s novels include At ‘Home with the Templetons’, ‘Those Faraday Girls’, ‘Family Baggage’, ‘The Alphabet Sisters’, ‘Spin the Bottle’, ‘Upside Down Inside Out’, ‘A Taste For It’ and most recently, ‘Lola’s Secret’.
‘At Home with the Templetons’ was a number 1 best seller in Australia last year and was shortlisted for the General Fiction Book of the Year at this year’s Australian Book Industry Awards. It was also shortlisted for the Eason Popular Fiction Award in the Irish Book Awards in 2010.
Monica grew up in the Clare Valley wine region of South Australia where her father was a Station Master and her mother worked in the local library. For the past 20 years she has lived between Ireland and Australia. Before becoming a full-time author she worked at many jobs, including book publicist, promoting such well known writers as Edna O’Brien, Roald Dahl and Tim Winton. In 2006 she was the ambassador for the Australian Government’s Books Alive national reading campaign, promoting books and reading via libraries and reading groups throughout Australia.

Thurles & District Camera Club
At our meeting last Wednesday, November 30th we had a session on table top photography. Jim Troy provided a special designed hut accompanied with the appropriate lighting. Members were given the opportunity to get some fantastic still life scenes. Both Jim Troy and John O’Laughlin gave advice and assistance to all. It was thoroughly enjoyed.
We will have the judging of our Nature competition on Wednesday, December 7th, our judge for the night is Tom Gallagher, a renowned Nature enthusiast. Our Christmas party is on Saturday, December 10th. Anyone interested contact the officers immediately.
Our trip around Thurles is on Wednesday, December 14th, everyone will require a tripod. Also make sure to be properly kitted out as the weather conditions may not be favourable.
At a recent meeting of Craobh Sheain Ui Cheallanain, Thurles, arrangements were made to hold a Churchgate Collection this week-end 10th and 11th December. Rota was made out with the helpers to whom we are very grateful. Coiste Sheain Ui Cheallanain wishes to thank the local community for their past generosity and we look forward to their continued patronage.

Thurles Special Olympics
Our eagerly awaited Christmas Disco takes place on Wednesday next, 14th December in Thurles Rugby Club from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. We are hoping for a big attendance and as usual Santa will pay us a visit. Admission is free so make a date to be there. All welcome.
Meeting this Wednesday night at 8 p.m. sharp. CHristmas Party after meeting. Flower arranging on 14th December. All are welcome.
Club For Dancing
The Club’s dance on Sunday, 27th November, was a great night of dancing to the music of ‘Geraldine and Kinfolk’. M.C. on the night was Rose Nolan.
The Club’s next Dance is the Club’s annual Christmas Party Dance in the Premier Ballroom, Thurles. This is a ticket only dance no tickets are sold on the night. Dancing from 8.30 p.m. to 12 midnight. Music by “Checkers”. Plenty of extra spots on the night, it is always the highlight of our year. Please note, no ticket, no dance. There are still a few tickets left, contact any of the committee members.

Next Sunday 11th is THE BIG ONE to look forward to. The Monster Demolition Derby, with prize money of €1000 sponsored, the bookings are coming in. The last car moving will be the winner. With class 1 and 3, Rookies also running it should turn out to be a good days racing. First race off by the latest noon. Hope the weather might pick up a bit. Looking forward to seeing you all there
