ANY plans to get rid of Saturday parking charges in Templemore have been knocked on the head by Templemore Town Council.

The council voted by seven to two against a motion by Cllr Valerie Young to removeconsider removing parking charges in the town on Saturdays.

Her motion proposed that Templemore Town Council “should give serious consideration to sanction the exemption of Saturday pay parking charges, in view of the economic downtuurn and to try and generate additional and much needed business in the locality”.

At this Monday’s council meeting, Cllr Young stated that she felt Saturday should be exempt because “we are in for many years of decline in trading and as a council we need to be seen to be doing something about this”.

She said that pay parking worked very well in the middle of the Celtic Tiger and was supposed to be cost neutral, but that they now needed to convince people to shop in Templemore.
