Laura Connolly, a student of the Leaving Certificate class of 2013, is to be awarded an Ad Astra Scholarship from UCD - rewarded in recognition of exceptional achievements and talents in scholarship, sport and the performing arts.
As the recipient, Laura will receive specialised supports to develop her talents, individual mentoring, a programme of specific academic activities, and a bursary covering fee remission, reduction of on-campus accommodation costs, and a stipend.
Laura will receive her award on Thursday, January 30 at 7pm in UCD O’Reilly Hall. The award ceremony will be followed by a celebratory dinner and the school will be presented with a commemorative picture in recognition of this tremendous event. The school is very proud of Laura and her amazing achievements.
The Concern Debating team debated against St Ann’s from Tipperary town on Wednesday evening last. The motion was ‘Multinational Corporations are cleaning up their act’, the Ursuline team was opposing the motion. Leah Carroll led the team which consisted of Roisin Putti, Rose Cantillon, Clodagh Nash and Simone Gordon. The debate was defeated so the Ursuline team won. The team is currently preparing for another debate ‘Social Media improves our understanding of major world events’ against the CBS Thurles,at 7.30pm in the Ursuline on Thursday, January 30.
MILK IT COMPETITION
Seven TY teams entered this nationwide competition in November. All teams had to make a film pitch outlining their marketing strategy to increase dairy intake among teenagers. One team, ‘The White Tash Brigade’, was selected to progress to the next round. The team is now required to roll out their marketing strategy and put it into action. The team consists of Maeve Carew, Mollie Kavanagh, Aine Coman and Lucy Hayes.
DRAGONS’ JUNIOR DEN
All Transition Year mini-companies entered the RTE Junior Dragons’ Den competition and the groups had several phone calls suggesting interest in their ideas. We hope our students will get to face the Dragons!
The Senior A team won in the Cup Quarter Final last week, beating Clonakilty 2-0. The Senior C also played Clonakilty but were unlucky to lose 7-0. The Junior B team faced Clonakilty on the same day but lost 3-2. Two First Year teams also played on the day: the First Year A2 beat Clonakilty 2-0 and the First Year (blue) team 2-0. The Junior team also played Rockwell in the Junior B Cup this week but lost 0-2 score.
