As a nation we are probable the number one funeral goers on the planet, so the announcement on local radio last week of the death of Michael Ryan, Cashel, Cathedral St, Thurles and Templeogue, Dublin caused a bit of a stir among a certain age group in the City of the Kings.
No one seemed to know who this man was. A phone call to Hugh Ryan, Undertaker in Thurles revealed all. Michael was the son of David and Bridget Ryan and brother of Paddy, Delia and Mamie, Boherclough St and Treacy Villas, Cashel all of whom predeceased him. Like his father before him Michael, was a railwayman working his way up from cleaner to fireman to finally becoming an engine driver in 1940 working out of Thurles station to any destination in the country on a daily basis. Enforced early retirement saw him run a very successful business in Cathedral St, Thurles from where he moved to Dublin some years ago, he died on Monday January 20th and was interred in St Patricks Cemetery, Thurles on Wednesday 22nd January. May he rest in peace.
