An animal rights group is calling on Tipperary Councils to ban animal act circuses from using public land.

The Animal Rights Action Network will stage a peaceful protest in Nenagh this sunday at the Courtney Brothers Circus which is in town.

The circus received criticism earlier this year, when one of its elephants escaped in Cork city.

The group is calling for Tipperary councils to ban the acts from setting up camp on public lands.

Councils in Monaghan, Waterford, Drogheda and Wicklow town have recently passed such motions.
