Award - Congratulations to Pat Ryan, Cloneygowney, who was recently awarded a Certificate in Local History from the University of Limerick. The title of Pat’s year end essay was ‘A Brief history of slate quarrying in Portroe and an outline and analysis of the events surrounding its closure in 1956 and the effect this had on the locality’. Pat would like to thank everyone who helped him out and especially to Michael Joy, Curragh who, as per usual, had a great supply of very useful historical information to share.
Portroe Tidy Town - As was the case last year, the local tidy towns committee are going to be putting up Christmas lights in the Church grounds, with the big ‘SWITCH ON’ timed for 5pm on the evening of Saturday, December 8th. In conjunction with this event, the committee are also organising a colouring competition for the boys and girls of the local National School. The theme of the picture to be coloured is that of good litter practise. Litter continues to be one of the biggest problems facing the Parish year in and year out, so it is hoped that this will raise awareness of the issue. All coloured pictures will be entered into a draw and 3 lucky entrants will each win a book voucher valued at €10. As well as that, one lucky entrant will be drawn out to perform the actual ‘SWITCH ON’ of the Christmas lights. It is hoped that as many Parishioners as possible will turn up for this lovely event.
