Thurles Toastmasters was formed in 1987 and this year is celebrating its 25th year in existence. The club is a part of the parent organization called ‘Toastmaster International Organization’ which was founded in the United States in 1924.
The organization has crossed into 166 countries and with that presence has amassed a growing membership of over 280,000 members. Its core value is building confidence in individuals for them to make steps towards growing their skills, to be able to stand up in front of a small group of people and speak. It works both ways with the audience giving respect towards the individual and fostering an arena where further self development can be gained.
Our last meeting took place on Wednesday 19th September, where we had three great speeches. First, congratulations to Mary Darcy who performed her maiden “Icebreaker” speech. She gave us an enjoyable synopsis from her early days in her home place of Kilworth, Co. Cork through to her journey to Thurles. Secondly, Sarah Butler gave us a great speech called ‘Turning the Pages of Time’. She gave us an enjoyable account of childhood experiences as a young girl, of her family life, friendships, magazines and books. It culminated with a short recital from the, ‘Age of Innocence’ by Edith Wharton. Finally Maureen Broderick gave us an enjoyable speech based on a poem by William Butler Yeats called ‘The Swans at Coole’, finishing in a short recital of the poem itself. Maureen also provided topics for the group to discuss which included titles such as ‘What is Characteristically Irish?’, ‘Ageism’ and ‘The Bucket List’.
Our next meeting takes place at the Anner Hotel, Thurles on the 3rd October 2012 at 8pm sharp and will finish around 10pm. We have a club contest taking place that night and all our welcome. Please remember, there is no charge on any night throughout the year to all non-members or people interested in coming along for the first time.
